The Chronic Ills – Production

The Tamarama Rock Surfers, present The Chronic Ills of Robert Zimmerman: AKA Bob Dylan (A Lie) – A Theatrical Talking Blues and Glissendorf by award-winning poet and playwright Benito di Fonzo. Dylan is a notoriously enigmatic cultural icon. So, rather than unscrambling Bob’s life in predictably realist biographical form and finding method in the madness, Di Fonzo’s script embraces the madness of the method. He presents Dylan’s life through his own idiom of rhythmic wordplay, riffing on his many voices, phases, phrases, influences, epiphanies and styles of music and myth that the man himself created.

After a sell-out season in Sydney in 2009, The Chronic Ills has been developed by TRS in association with Riverside Theatre’s ‘BREAKOUT’ program and Hot House Theatre’s ‘A Month in the Country’ residency. It features Sydney actor & musician Matt Ralph as Bob Dylan. Matt is one of those musicians you envy: he can play virtually any instrument you give him and pays the bills by playing gigs all around Australia (www.mattralph.com). Matt is supported by Lenore Munro as Joan Baez (and Bob’s wives, Jesus and Bono), Andrew Henry as Abraham Lincoln (and Johnny Cash, Woodie Guthrie and TS Eliot). With Lucinda Gleeson in the director’s chair, this talented young team are excited to travel across the country to bring the story of one of the 20th Centuries most important cultural icons to Adelaide’s audiences.

“It’s a long story mister, involving bible, ghosts, chaos, clocks, watermelons, everything”
